Tech Jobs that don’t need a degree

It’s easy to feel like you need to go to university in order to get a job in the world of tech. However, this is not necessarily the case for many tech jobs.

The idea of entering the world of digital technology can be intimidating, especially if you do not have a degree. You might assume that you’d need to study for years at university to have any chance of getting a job in this field, which puts many people off. However, this is simply not true, as there are many entry points into the IT sector that prioritise skill over qualifications.

Here are some of the best tech careers or tech jobs you can enter without needing a degree:

Web development
While development might seem like one of the most technical aspects of IT, that doesn’t mean a degree is necessary. The most important part of your job application is the experience you have with the backend of websites. In fact, a degree might be completely useless for this kind of job, as many do not include the most up-to-date or useful programming languages.

Instead, it is more useful to learn as much as possible about HTML, CSS, Javascript, Ruby or other languages, and build up a portfolio of examples of your work. This expertise will be more valuable to many employers than a degree.
Web design
The front end of websites also need to be created and designed by talented professionals, and once again a university degree is not necessarily the best indication that an applicant would be the best person for the job. Instead, a combination of creative design skills with coding ability will be enough to get many jobs in this field.

Again, the important thing is to build up a portfolio to show what you can do. A lot of jobs in this field are focused on user experience, so it’s not enough to build a great-looking website; it must be functional, intuitive and easy-to-use.
Data analysis
Web data is a rapidly growing field at the moment, and while senior analysts often have many qualifications and a great deal of experience, there is a need for entry-level professionals. At first, this career might involve a lot of spreadsheet creation and getting together bulk loads of information, it is a route into a career in analysis.
Security analysis
This is another field where a lot of people with degrees go straight into more senior positions, meaning there are a lot of entry-level jobs available. You can start with basic testing and reviewing logs, and progress from there into higher-level roles once you have gained experience.
