What you need to know about recruitment in 2018
The way people find candidates to fill their jobs is changing but what do you need to know about recruitment in 2018?
If you’re looking for a job, understanding the way the recruitment world works is a key element of securing the right role for you. Whether you’re wanting to land your first position in the workplace or are taking the plunge and changing careers, if you don’t know how employers are searching for candidates, you’ll struggle.
Like many other sectors, it’s evolving almost constantly and how people search and find their dream job is massively different now to how it was just five years ago.
So if you’re looking for a new job in 2018, these are the things you need to know:
You need to be smart online
Okay, so this one isn’t a groundbreaker but the recruitment sector has moved online. However, it’s not just job platforms like Herd or social media like LinkedIn that are making the difference. Employers are far more aware of your online connections and activity. This makes your online persona a fantastic way to create a good – or bad – impression.
Of course, you want to be using tools like Herd or LinkedIn to look for jobs, but you also need to ensure your digital trail is something you’d be happy for a future employer to see. Make sure you Google yourself and see what comes up, if you don’t like what you see, review your privacy settings on social media.
Jobs, jobs, jobs
There are indications that many of the UK’s industries will continue to grow well into 2018, with nearly two-thirds of recruiters looking to hire more candidates than they did in 2017. This means it’s an exciting time to take that leap and find a new job, especially if you’re looking for a career move. Employers are seeing the cost-saving benefits of online recruitment in 2018, so make sure you are getting in the habit of checking businesses ‘careers’ section of their sites.
Employers are now much more focused on whether you’re the right person for the role over whether you have the right qualifications. Especially in the tech world, companies understand that they can train new candidates in the technical skills needed a lot easier than you can try to make someone fit into your culture.
Candidate experience will be key
As we head further into 2018, employers are going to continue to prioritise the candidate experience in recruitment. Employers are becoming more open-minded about what constitutes as experience too. They will be looking at leadership and problem-solving skills and how you have appiled them previously. They want to see that you have the ability to pick up new skills and can work agile. Previously it’s felt like the power was completely with the company looking for a new hire but more and more businesses are seeing that the most exciting and valuable candidates have their pick of the jobs market.
This doesn’t just mean that they need to treat the candidates they like well in the recruitment process, as social media means that people can very quickly find out what it’s like to apply for a job with any specific company.
At Herd, we will continue to prioritise the candidate experience and look to create transparency through our job platform. By doing this, we always aim to put employers and candidates on an even keel and create a relationship of mutual respect from the start. How it should be.
