What you’ll do…

The Technical Delivery Manager will be responsible for coaching, mentoring and leading autonomous engineering teams who are responsible for the tribes’ service and products, being accountable for their productivity and output.

Responsibilities include;

Owning and delivering business outcomes by leading collaboration and communication across the tribe and the wider business
Maximising business value from our resources and delivering operational excellence for our products and services
Leading conflict resolution, facilitating compromise and ensuring effective prioritisation and efficiency across the tribe
Initiating and maintaining close and effective relationships with technical and non-technical stakeholders, as well as proactively identifying and engaging with key influencers
Ensuring financial targets are met and teams are operating within budget to agreed targets
Accountable for ensuring squad products and associated output is fit for purpose, joining up our services and delivering across squads in a high-quality fit-for-purpose product offering
Accountable for effective management of availability, risk and security within squads and across the tribe
Part of the Incident Command rota for company-wide major incidents affecting our products and services

How you’ll do it…

This role will report into the Head of Technology (Infrastructure).

Key relationships: Director of Infrastructure, Head of Product, Programme Manager, Engineering Managers, Technical Leads, People Operations Managers.

People Management

Matrix manage and develop teams of squads, prevent knowledge and responsibility silos, manage skills gaps and reduce key man dependencies
Develop & motivate those in your teams by providing clear focus and direction
Proactively manage and develop the engineering managers under your line management, and facilitate that of the people within their squads
Define and maintain the best team structures (aligned to a culture of “small autonomous agile teams”) to match the current focus and needs of our business
Proactively identify opportunities for efficiencies and for investment in our people, and facilitate the engagement with People Operations managers
Set the clear focus and the priority for your teams, and give them the autonomy to get the job done with your support
Hold your teams to account for their performance, continually challenging them and developing them to the next level of what they are capable of

Create a Sustainable & Scalable Engineering Delivery

Evangelise & prioritise engineering best practice (the “how” of achieving the business goal) across squads, working across the business to provide clear direction for the squads products and services
Lead and develop behaviours and output of Engineering squads, including proactively monitoring and managing levels of technical debt, common coding practices, proactively identifying and managing risks, framework & language choice, development build and deployment tooling
Ensure that technical expertise in incident management, root cause analysis, post incident decisions and technical oversight of remedial work is carried out to the highest standard

Champion Quality and Continuous Improvement

Work with our tribes technical leaders as well as its stakeholders to ensure we deliver high quality engineering solutions and maintain the right balance between delivery speed vs operational risk
Constantly make our engineering better: the skills and expertise of the team, improving delivery predictability and speed, operational awareness and responsibility
Lead effective interpretation and prioritisation of business risk and improvement, proactively engaging with stakeholders and gaining buy-in followed by delivering continuous improvement

Be a Technical Leader

This role is a critical leadership role responsible for end to end delivery of teams of squads, and has a strong voice in key technology decisions
Be a strong and highly adaptable leader who constantly re-evaluates and changes approach to deliver the best possible business outcome, even if it isn’t a popular decision
Lead teams on operational service and delivery, providing high quality technical leadership and management of risks, problems, and incidents
Lead and mentor squad leaders in appropriate delivery practices, including Scrum, Kanban, Scrumban and Waterfall methodologies
Lead and mentor squad leaders in appropriate engineering practices, including site reliability engineering, devops, modern incident management, post-mortem/retrospectives and software development
Facilitate, lead and develop communities of practice within the tribe, working with people operations and our learning & development teams

Service Delivery

Work with the Central Tech services operations and lifecycle teams to ensure strong focus is maintained for service quality and platform stability
Using appropriate service budget methodologies and growth trends for key technical services coach the squads to identify problem areas and system constraints, work with the squads to appropriately prioritise the work with the Head of Product
Be accountable for third party software/service providers owned by the engineering squads to ensure products are fit for purpose, are delivered to a high quality and represent value for money
Advocate the right metrics for services and products – (technology KPIs) velocity, quality and service delivery and ensure technical reporting is issued to key stakeholders by the squads

Key Characteristics and Experience

Experience of leading multiple engineering teams in an evolving and dynamic environment, ideally in online betting & gaming or similar web-scale industry where software is always-on, and customer experience is always more than a consideration
A committed team player who demonstrates exceptional communication, interpersonal skills and consistent high energy levels, who recognises the importance of people in technology solutions
An experienced leader with a reputation for thought leadership, strategic thinking and with a strong technical background
An analytic problem solver with a strong sense of autonomy, with an open and collaborative approach to getting the job done
Demonstrable delivery and operational skills, with a clear understanding of motivation, incentives, and relevant management practices
