Leeds tech moves from strength to strength
The Tech Nation 2018 report has found that Leeds tech firms achieved more than £1 billion turnover in the last 12 months, as the sector continues to grow.
One of the big strengths of Leeds as a city is its brilliant tech scene. It’s responsible for many jobs, as well as the development of skills throughout the city. However, a new report has really highlighted the strengths of this industry, showing how far ahead of other cities Leeds is when it comes to tech talent.
The Tech Nation 2018 report sums up the state of technology in the UK on both a national and a regional basis, and Leeds have come across extremely well. Once again, the city’s tech industries have achieved a turnover of more than £1 billion over the last 12 months. That’s around £83,000 per employee.
This is good news for workers in Leeds, as it means more employment opportunities throughout the city. There were 12,103 jobs in Leeds’ tech sector in 2017; up slightly from 11,715 the year before.
The Tech Nation report attributed Leeds’ three universities to the local tech sector’s success, as they produce thousands of talented graduates each year that comes flooding into the city’s industries each year. However, there are plenty of other factors that contribute to the growth of tech businesses.
One important highlight has been the Leeds Digital Festival. This has become the largest digital festival in the north of England, and during the second week of its most recent iteration, there were more tech events in Leeds than there were in San Francisco. It has continued to expand each year, providing a hub for talented tech professionals.
Then there are the major companies that have made their home in Leeds. Rockstar Games and Cooperative Innovations are two of the main ones, but the Tech Nation report also highlighted Sky Betting and Gaming. It is one of only two Yorkshire-based tech firms classed as unicorns, which are companies assessed as having a value in excess of $1 billion. The firm has created an additional 230 jobs in the last 12 months, and continues to grow.
However, if you talk to Leeds’ startups, one advantage jumps to the forefront: the city’s helpful tech community. This was the number one strength they identified when talking to Tech Nation, also highlighting the appealing area and the close proximity to the universities.
